Making Giants Part 4: The Building

In Part 3 we built out a desert scene that can serve at the environment for our little film. With some lighting, some nice textures, and a little compositing magic it looks pretty good! Now, let's create that big ol' building that's going to serve as the Goliath in our story.

We're going to plan out the building in Illustrator, model it up in Cinema 4D, and then give it a nice texture.

You'll learn a lot of modeling tricks in this video, plus get a good look at the workflow that Joey used to go from Illustrator to Cinema 4D. Creating this building took some time, so you'll also see a lot of sped-up sections where he tweaks texture settings forever to try and get the look he’s after. Tons of stuff to learn in this one!

If you have any questions, click over to the Q&A tab to post them. Other students can answer you, and we'll put our team on the case to try and get you a solution ASAP.

00:00:12,328- [Instructor] Our scene sure looks purdy.
00:00:15,198So now we can move on to this building.
00:00:18,023I've got some reference images that I'm kinda digging
00:00:21,194so I'm gonna try and mash them up
00:00:23,159to make something cool looking and imposing.
00:00:26,380So I start by going in to Illustrator
00:00:28,940and just blocking out the basic shape of the building.
00:00:32,780Now before I go crazy doing stuff in Illustrator,
00:00:36,322I wanna make sure that what I create
00:00:39,458is actually gonna work in the context
00:00:41,517of the frames that I've already set up.
00:00:44,036So real quick you can see here I've brought in
00:00:46,418all of those reference images that I liked.
00:00:49,042This was kind of the main one that really jumped out at me,
00:00:52,615but there was aspects of these other images that I liked.
00:00:55,229So I just wanted to be looking at them
    00:00:57,074while I'm designing this.
00:00:58,572One thing that occurred to me
00:01:00,295was this building here is very tall and skinny,
00:01:03,290and if I hop back into Cinema 4D for a second,
00:01:05,474you can see that the way this frame is blocked out,
00:01:08,972this building isn't really that skinny.
00:01:10,971It's a little bit fatter and bigger,
    00:01:12,732and I wanna make sure
00:01:14,012that the building I design in Illustrator
    00:01:17,015still has the same proportions
00:01:19,812so that when I pop it back in
00:01:22,391and get rid of this placeholder building
    00:01:24,071it all makes sense.
00:01:25,330What I'm gonna do is actually select this building here
00:01:28,012and I'm gonna select one of these polygons.
    00:01:30,311So I'm in polygon mode.
    00:01:31,692I just select that one,
    00:01:33,277and Cinema 4D, down here,
00:01:35,132tells me the exact size of that polygon.
    00:01:38,514So it's 73 by 248.
00:01:42,695So why don't we just round up?
    00:01:44,412We'll say 75 by 250.
    00:01:47,031So just remember those numbers.
    00:01:48,77275 by 250,
00:01:50,492and I'm gonna grab my rectangle tool
00:01:52,834and I'm gonna double click in Illustrator.
00:01:55,532If you do that, this pops up,
00:01:57,769and the width can be 75 and the height can be 250,
00:02:02,587and now what this gives me
00:02:05,116is a rectangle with the exact same proportions
00:02:08,511or pretty darn close to what we were using in Cinema 4D.
00:02:12,212So what I'm gonna do is actually invert the stroke
    00:02:15,836and the fill here.
00:02:16,956So I've got this nice little guide.
00:02:18,736I'm gonna make a new layer here.
00:02:20,897I'm gonna actually call this guide.
00:02:23,651I'm gonna cut it off of the building,
00:02:26,193cut that shape off the building layer
00:02:27,895and paste it into the guide layer,
00:02:29,633and the next thing I wanna do
00:02:31,175is I wanna be able to design on a grid.
00:02:33,230It's gonna make life a lot easier in terms of
00:02:35,756making sure that there's symmetry and things like that
    00:02:38,673with the building.
00:02:39,754So what I'm gonna do is go to my View menu
00:02:42,215and I'm gonna turn on show grid,
00:02:44,476and I'm also gonna turn on snap to grid.
00:02:47,415And what I wanna do is move this guide
00:02:51,297so that one of these corners is right on a grid point.
00:02:56,568Then I wanna come down here
00:02:58,535and I basically just wanna cheat these points over.
00:03:02,177So I'm hitting the A key to go to this direct selection tool
00:03:05,410which lets me select individual points,
00:03:07,857and then I can grab those points
00:03:09,335and just pull them and they will snap to the grid
00:03:12,888because I have snap to grid turned on.
00:03:14,871If they're not snapping, make sure you have
    00:03:17,149snap to grid turned on,
00:03:18,393and then I can do the same thing on these points
    00:03:20,869on the side.
00:03:21,868So I'm gonna select this point.
00:03:23,833Come up here, select this point,
00:03:25,492and then I'm just gonna move them just a little bit,
    00:03:28,470and this one didn't move.
00:03:29,734So let me move that one individually.
00:03:31,369So now I've got a shape that's pretty much the right size.
00:03:35,957It's very very very close to the size
00:03:38,815of the polygon that we measured in Cinema 4D,
    00:03:42,095but everything's on a grid now.
00:03:44,583This is gonna make it a little bit easier to do symmetry,
00:03:48,111and this would actually be a lot easier
00:03:50,906if I made this a little bit bigger.
00:03:53,791I'm gonna hold Shift so I can make it the right size.
00:03:56,991And you see what I'm doing.
00:03:58,351I'm looking for these thicker grid lines
00:04:01,353and I basically wanna make this so that,
00:04:03,753I wanna make it big enough so that
00:04:05,375it takes up one, two, three,
00:04:07,570four of these big kind of areas.
00:04:09,615So let me just pop back in here real quick
    00:04:13,113and snap these points over.
    00:04:15,972All right.
00:04:17,215And now we are gonna be set up
    00:04:20,596to pretty easily,
00:04:22,756there we go, make symmetrical stuff,
00:04:24,937because we know the middle of the building's
    00:04:26,633gonna be right here.
    00:04:27,716This lien right here.
00:04:29,076It's gonna be easy to be symmetrical
    00:04:32,415and all that good stuff.
00:04:33,737All right so this is my guide.
00:04:35,193I'm gonna bring this down here
00:04:36,857and I wanna make it a little bit lighter in color.
00:04:42,415So I'm just gonna go here to my color
00:04:44,537and pick a lighter color so I can still see it,
00:04:47,236and then I'm gonna lock it.
00:04:48,996So now I can see the contour of that building.
    00:04:51,993Like that, the right size,
00:04:53,513but now I can go to my building layer
00:04:55,392and actually start building out this building.
    00:04:57,295So what I like about,
00:04:59,690one of the things I like about this building
00:05:01,337is that there's kind of different levels to it.
    00:05:03,636If we zoom in closely,
00:05:06,753you can see that you've got this bottom level
00:05:09,045and then it juts in a little bit,
00:05:10,645then it goes up and it juts in,
    00:05:12,629and I kinda like it.
00:05:13,864Gives it this cool kind of pointy staggered effect.
00:05:16,928So I wanna do that on this building.
00:05:19,008So what I'm gonna do is grab my rectangle tool,
00:05:21,985and it's gonna snap to this grid.
00:05:24,128Which is gonna make it really easy
    00:05:26,187to start building this up.
00:05:27,669And then I'm just gonna copy and paste this shape
00:05:30,134and move it up like this.
00:05:33,084And these shapes I can actually make them darker.
00:05:36,309It doesn't matter what color I'm making any of this,
00:05:38,444and then once I've got this one moved up a little bit,
00:05:41,008I can move inwards while holding the option key.
00:05:45,226So it moves in from the center.
00:05:47,445Cool, and then I'll do the same thing again,
00:05:50,255and maybe this section, looking here,
00:05:53,365maybe this second section should be a little bit longer.
00:05:57,045So let me just move this up like this.
00:06:00,102Move this one down a little bit like so,
00:06:04,027and then I'll copy it again.
    00:06:07,349Scoot it in,
    00:06:08,347and I'm just sort of,
00:06:09,525I'm just kind of playing around here.
00:06:11,168I just wanna see what we're getting.
    00:06:14,288There we go.
00:06:16,187Cool, and then maybe at the top
00:06:18,267we can have a couple of extra little sections like this.
00:06:23,425Cool, all right so you've got this interesting shape.
00:06:25,864I can select all these shapes now,
00:06:27,787and I wanna make sure that my path finder's open.
00:06:30,469So if it's not, you go to Window, Pathfinder.
00:06:32,626The pathfinder tool lets you combine multiple shapes.
00:06:36,300So I've got all these shapes
00:06:38,163and I hit this first one, unite.
00:06:40,284Basically merges all those shapes together
00:06:42,565and now I have this outline of my building.
00:06:45,547And it's still very chunky looking and it's kinda cool,
    00:06:50,547and I think that's gonna work,
00:06:52,725and because, one thing I should probably do
00:06:55,867is actually extend it so it goes all the way to the top.
00:06:58,367So let me hit undo for a minute,
00:07:00,107and I'm just gonna knock this one up to the top like that.
00:07:04,667Knock this one up a little bit,
00:07:06,827and then select them all again and pathfind.
00:07:09,165So now I've got something that is the right proportion
00:07:15,216so that when I bring this into Cinema 4D and I extrude it,
00:07:20,091it's gonna line up very nicely with this shape
    00:07:23,211that's already in there.
    00:07:24,672Cool, all right,
00:07:25,669so the next thing I wanna do is make a copy of this shape.
00:07:30,106I'm just gonna make a copy,
00:07:32,011I'm gonna move it over here to the side.
    00:07:36,308Here we go,
00:07:37,451and I'm just gonna leave that copy there,
00:07:40,456'cause now on this copy what I wanna do
00:07:42,569is add some detail like windows
    00:07:44,992and interesting stuff like that.
00:07:47,332So I do like these window.
    00:07:50,609I think they're neat.
00:07:52,469But I think that one of the things
00:07:54,625that kind of fooled me the first time I looked at this image
00:07:57,638you know these are all individual windows,
00:07:59,712but in the center of this building here,
00:08:01,814the windows kind of mush together
00:08:03,627and they look like these really long tall strips of glass.
00:08:07,093Which I thought were kind of creepy looking and interesting.
00:08:09,523So I wanted to try and make something like that.
    00:08:11,872So what I'm gonna do,
00:08:14,108let me just come down here and I'm just gonna pull up
00:08:17,349a really long strip like this,
    00:08:21,893and I'll have it go, I don't know,
00:08:23,893maybe that's a little too high so I'm gonna pop in here
00:08:29,132and I'm just gonna pull this shape down a little bit.
00:08:32,230Maybe it comes right up to where this level kind of ends
    00:08:37,868right there.
00:08:40,169And I thought it would also be interesting
00:08:42,908if this was kind of pointy.
00:08:45,004Now you could see here, there we go,
00:08:48,005wanna make sure it snapped to the grid.
00:08:49,569It'll make it a lot easier to make symmetry and stuff.
00:08:51,844I want the top of this window to be a little pointy.
00:08:54,108I think it'll make it a little kinda cooler looking.
00:08:56,529So I'm gonna grab my pen tool.
00:08:58,529I need to turn off snap to grid temporarily.
00:09:02,389And because I've got my smart guides turned on,
00:09:06,289as I move my pen, right over here it'll tell me
    00:09:09,054where the center is,
00:09:10,578and then I can add a point there.
    00:09:12,390Pardon me.
00:09:14,626I need to make sure that I'm getting
00:09:16,108that little plus symbol right next to the pen
    00:09:18,166and then click,
00:09:19,426and then I can select that point and move it up
00:09:22,289and have a little pointy window like that up at the top.
    00:09:25,809Cool?
00:09:27,164All right so I've got one of those
00:09:29,065and then I wanna copy it
00:09:31,468so I'm just gonna hold Option and Shift
00:09:34,348and hit the left arrow key
00:09:35,756and it's just gonna knock that thing over
00:09:37,686and make a copy of it.
00:09:39,308And then I can just turn my snap to grid back on
    00:09:44,046and it'll snap it to a grid,
00:09:46,226and I moved it down a little bit by accident.
00:09:51,068So let's knock it back up,
    00:09:52,644and there we go.
00:09:53,788All right so now we've got two of these things,
    00:09:55,948and it may look like,
    00:09:57,628let me turn off,
00:09:59,030let me actually hide the grid for a minute.
00:10:01,844These look really thin kind of out of context here,
00:10:06,108but one of the things that's actually kinda tricky
    00:10:09,030when you're building stuff in 3D
00:10:10,828is to make sure that things look big
00:10:13,046if they're supposed to be big,
00:10:14,428and a good way of doing that
00:10:15,889is by loading stuff up with detail,
    00:10:18,230because when things are big,
00:10:20,553big features like windows tend to look small
00:10:23,649because if it's big and you're seeing the whole thing
    00:10:26,209on your screen,
    00:10:27,489that means you're far away
00:10:28,828and you should see tons and tons of detail.
    00:10:31,190So I wanna make, I don't know,
    00:10:33,019maybe another copy of these,
00:10:37,003and then maybe what I can then do is just grab these three.
00:10:41,446Let me turn my grid back on.
    00:10:42,929The hotkey is Command apostrophe,
00:10:46,576and then I can just come over here
00:10:50,630and set up symmetry on the other side.
00:10:54,740To make it easier to see these,
00:10:57,190what I might do is actually flip the stroke and the fill.
00:11:00,046This will make it a little bit easier as we're working
    00:11:02,369to kind of gauge.
00:11:03,607So the next thing I wanna do is start adding some windows,
00:11:06,588and I want some variation in them,
00:11:08,566so what I think I'll do is I'll have the windows
00:11:10,630at the bottom be a little bit bigger.
    00:11:12,790So maybe what we'll do
00:11:14,627is we'll have these windows be four squares.
    00:11:18,268Four grid squares.
00:11:19,569And let me put one down here at the bottom.
    00:11:23,590Let me move this thing.
    00:11:26,948Illustrator's giving me trouble
00:11:31,052so I'm just gonna use my arrow keys.
00:11:33,089Let me select it, move it down here.
    00:11:35,148There we go.
00:11:36,305Okay, so I want one at the bottom,
00:11:37,989and then I'm gonna hold Option and Shift
    00:11:39,889and move another one up,
    00:11:42,070let's say there,
00:11:43,625and actually they shouldn't be at the bottom,
00:11:45,428they should be up a little bit.
00:11:47,148So I'm gonna then copy this one again,
    00:11:50,710and once I copy one,
    00:11:53,130you can hit Command D,
00:11:54,870and Command D, what it does is it does
    00:11:57,860the transform again command.
00:12:00,049So whatever the last transform you did was,
00:12:02,529it will just do it again.
00:12:04,332And then I can copy this and move it over here,
00:12:08,929and then maybe copy this and move it over here.
    00:12:12,103Cool, all right,
00:12:14,268and then I can grab these windows here
00:12:19,345and I can copy them over to this side,
00:12:24,248and then I can Control click
    00:12:26,068and say Transform, Reflect,
00:12:29,468and I wanna reflect them on the vertical access.
00:12:31,990Access, the vertical axis, there we go.
00:12:35,548And it'll just flip them for me.
00:12:37,169All right so now we're keeping that symmetry
    00:12:39,569and it's really easy.
00:12:40,709So now moving up a little further on the building
00:12:43,068we can make those windows a little smaller.
00:12:44,668So then what we could do
00:12:46,908is make little groups of one grid square windows like this.
00:12:53,249All right, and because we have snap to grid turned on,
00:12:57,372it's actually really easy to make these.
00:13:01,932Cool, all right so now we've got these groups of three.
00:13:07,850And I'm gonna copy this group and move it up here,
    00:13:11,885and it's giving me trouble
00:13:13,661because what it's trying to do
00:13:15,266is it's trying to snap the center point of this to the grid.
00:13:18,716So maybe if I select a whole groups of these
00:13:21,677and move them up it'll be better.
    00:13:23,661There we go,
00:13:24,659and then I can hit that Command D key
00:13:27,505and then up here I gotta get rid of this one.
00:13:32,401You can see how quickly we're starting
00:13:34,445to build up a very detailed kind of thing here.
00:13:37,346Let me select another group of these.
    00:13:39,624Copy them up here.
00:13:42,482Try copying a group of four.
    00:13:45,362Yeah that's not gonna work.
00:13:46,984So I'm gonna have to kind of manually copy groups of these
00:13:49,544and snap them back into place so they show up
    00:13:51,902in the right place.
00:13:56,176And this is basically the process I'm gonna use
00:14:00,168to just build up a whole bunch of detail in this building.
00:14:05,403So I won't make you sit through the rest of this process,
00:14:09,579but I do wanna talk about how this is gonna be used.
00:14:12,601So I'm thinking that this is the front of the building,
00:14:16,544so I've got basically all these windows
    00:14:20,363and these crazy shapes
00:14:21,803and then I've also got the outline of the building.
00:14:23,883What I can do in Cinema 4D is extrude
00:14:26,320both of those, put them together,
00:14:28,021and kind of have some cool variation and definition
00:14:31,331in the front of the building,
00:14:33,579but we're also gonna see the side of the building
00:14:35,642and I want the side to look a little different.
00:14:37,599So I'm actually gonna make a complete copy
00:14:39,701of this setup that's gonna be used
00:14:41,520for the side of the building.
00:14:43,868Awesome, so this is step one in the process
    00:14:47,081of making the building.
00:14:50,341So I just kept adding more windows
00:14:52,603and visual detail kind of messing around
00:14:55,040and changing the shapes of some of these things.
00:14:57,094Trying to make it more visually interesting,
00:14:59,403and just thinking about the fact
00:15:00,923that when this comes into Cinema 4D,
    00:15:03,019it's gonna be really big,
00:15:04,539so I need a lot of detail on it.
00:15:06,738Once I had the front of the building kind of figured out,
00:15:09,680I did the side of the building,
00:15:11,520and I made it look pretty close to the front of the building
    00:15:14,821but a little bit different
00:15:16,240so that we could kind of combine the front and the sides
00:15:19,083and get a little bit of variation
    00:15:20,960when we modeled the building,
00:15:22,560and then it was time to export it.
00:15:25,120I need to make sure that these shapes come into Cinema 4D
00:15:29,710the way I want them to.
00:15:31,301So the way that I'm be using this is,
00:15:33,099I basically want to extrude this shape,
00:15:35,999and that's gonna be the bulk of the building.
00:15:37,960Then I wanna extrude this shape
00:15:39,840and I want all of these windows to be knocked out,
00:15:42,901and then I can basically just put this piece
    00:15:46,281on top of this piece,
    00:15:47,541and it'll look like there's this building
00:15:49,520with this really intricate complicated front to it.
00:15:52,240So in order for that to work,
00:15:53,718I need to make sure that Cinema 4D understands
00:15:55,759that this shape needs to have all of these little shapes
    00:15:58,400knocked out.
00:15:59,419So an easy way to do that
00:16:01,221is to take all your shapes and just fill them with black,
    00:16:05,099and before I do that,
00:16:06,421I'm gonna select this entire setup here,
00:16:08,842and then I'm gonna go in and hold Shift
    00:16:10,640and just deselect the outside.
00:16:13,400Which sometimes can be difficult to do.
00:16:17,083So another way I could do it is,
00:16:18,699oh I think I may have it grouped.
00:16:21,160So I'm gonna Shift, Command, G to un-group them first.
    00:16:24,501There we go.
00:16:25,659And then I can go in and select this whole group.
00:16:30,122Shift and get rid of the outline
00:16:32,239and then just group all these windows together.
00:16:35,067Then what I'm gonna do is select all of this
00:16:39,163and I'm gonna make the fill black.
00:16:42,283And then I'm gonna use my pathfinder,
00:16:44,080but I'm gonna use the second option, subtract.
    00:16:46,901So I need to, oops,
00:16:48,987I had a little window open here.
00:16:50,960Let's try that, there we go.
00:16:52,684Now I've basically taken that outer shape
00:16:55,723and knocked out all these inner shapes.
00:16:57,621So now I know this is gonna work properly
    00:17:00,379inside of Cinema 4D.
00:17:02,400So we'll do the same thing with the side
    00:17:04,283and then we'll hop into Cinema 4D
    00:17:06,000and start building this out.
00:17:07,723All right, so here are the outlines that I brought in
    00:17:10,560from Illustrator,
00:17:12,297and you can see that unfortunately
00:17:15,059Cinema 4D loses any naming that you did.
00:17:18,259So you gotta quickly rename these.
00:17:20,176So this is the front outline,
00:17:23,962and this is the side outline.
    00:17:28,480The side of the building.
    00:17:30,856Not outlibne but outline,
    00:17:32,854and then this group here,
    00:17:34,523this is the side detail.
00:17:38,702And this is the front detail.
00:17:43,243Just to double check that everything's working
    00:17:45,861the way we want,
00:17:47,438what I'm gonna do is take an extrude nurbs
00:17:50,501and I'm just gonna put the front detail in there
    00:17:53,403and say hierarchical.
00:17:55,520And you could see that it's not doing
    00:17:58,021exactly what we want yet,
00:17:59,565so what I need to do,
00:18:01,099let me turn that extrude off for a minute,
00:18:03,099is come in here, right click on front detail null
00:18:06,998and say select children so it selects every path in here,
    00:18:10,239and say connect objects.
00:18:12,619So then I can take this out and hide it
00:18:14,981and then turn the extrude back on
00:18:16,455and now we should have a perfect little shape set up,
    00:18:21,561and basically all that did
00:18:23,643was it took all of those splines
00:18:25,254and it connected them to make them one spline,
00:18:27,419and when you have one spline in Cinema 4D
    00:18:29,419that has multiple parts,
00:18:31,141it's smart enough to figure out
00:18:32,600that oh this part's inside of this bigger part.
    00:18:34,853That means it's a whole.
00:18:36,240And I wanna check and make sure that it's working
00:18:38,501on the side detail as well,
00:18:40,841because that's another really complicated one.
00:18:43,723So let me do the same thing.
00:18:45,736And let me make sure this is named correctly.
00:18:48,139So side detail, and I'm gonna say,
    00:18:50,480select children, connect objects,
00:18:54,774and then I'm gonna copy this extrude,
00:18:59,803and I'm going to delete front detail
00:19:04,320and put this copy of the side detail in there,
    00:19:06,603and that works too.
    00:19:08,176All right, good to go.
00:19:09,335So now we've got our side detail and our front detail.
00:19:12,960So those are already set up.
00:19:14,363So let me just say front detail
    00:19:17,721and side detail.
00:19:20,261All right so we're already starting to build this thing out.
00:19:22,438Now right now one problem we have
00:19:26,523is we are building this building
00:19:28,603but we have absolutely no sense of scale
00:19:31,355in relation to the scene that we've already
    00:19:33,243kind of laid out.
00:19:34,320I wanna make sure that when I build this building
    00:19:36,901and I'm happy with it,
00:19:38,320I can copy and paste it back into the scene
00:19:40,459and not have to do a whole lot of work
00:19:42,480to put it back in place and stuff like that.
00:19:44,681So I'm gonna go back to this scene here
00:19:46,754and just copy my building placeholder cube
    00:19:50,923and paste it in here.
00:19:52,080You can see that the scale of these
    00:19:53,899doesn't match this yet.
    00:19:55,360So let me go ahead,
00:19:57,003I'm gonna group all of this building stuff under knowledge.
    00:20:00,203We'll just call it building.
00:20:02,122And what I wanna do is use that same axis center command
00:20:06,421to bring the axis all the way down to the bottom here.
00:20:09,259Which will make it easy to line it up with this one.
00:20:11,621So I need to first say include children and use all objects
00:20:15,141because this null has a bunch of objects underneath it
    00:20:18,101and I'm gonna say Y negative 100 execute
00:20:21,723and it's gonna move that axis right to the middle there,
    00:20:24,843just like that.
00:20:26,022So then I can zero out the Y.
00:20:30,139I could actually just parent it under this building
    00:20:32,499and zero everything out.
00:20:35,403That way I can hit my T key and just scale it
00:20:40,480until it's the same scale as that building.
00:20:43,579And I could pop into my front view here
    00:20:46,750and get really precise.
    00:20:50,139Cool.
00:20:51,142Okay, and then what I can do
00:20:53,499is I can build out the pieces
00:20:55,243and then just line them all up
00:20:56,939on the center of this thing.
00:20:58,843So really quickly what I wanna do also
00:21:02,598is go into this building placeholder object,
00:21:05,680go to the Basic tab and say X-ray.
00:21:07,462That's gonna let me see through it
00:21:09,036so I can kinda use it as a guide
00:21:10,800just to make sure the volume of the building
    00:21:12,758stays about the same.
    00:21:13,883It's not gonna be exact,
    00:21:15,219but it should be close.
00:21:16,599So we've got front detail side detail.
00:21:18,880So let's turn this off temporarily
    00:21:21,441and with front detail,
00:21:22,734let's also do the front outline.
00:21:25,499So I can just copy this.
    00:21:27,618I'm gonna hold Command
00:21:28,881and copy this extrude right there,
00:21:31,676and I'll call this front outline.
00:21:36,503And I will just replace, just like that,
00:21:40,336and what I need to make sure
00:21:41,940is I need to make sure that these two splines
00:21:44,063are in the same place on X.
00:21:47,696So why don't I just zero that out?
    00:21:51,539Let's see here,
00:21:52,792and then these extrudes are in the same place, right?
00:21:56,397Cool, and now these splines are in about the same place.
00:22:00,602Now what I need to do is take that front detail
00:22:04,319and push it out this way.
00:22:06,715All right, and basically what I'm doing
00:22:08,559is I'm creating just a little bit of a knockout here.
00:22:12,782What's cool about doing it this way
00:22:14,943is that now it's gonna be very easy
00:22:17,276for me to have a different texture on the inside
00:22:19,356of these windows than on the outside,
00:22:21,197and to actually model this properly
00:22:23,919would be kind of a pain,
    00:22:25,967and the good thing is,
00:22:27,722the way we're gonna be texturing this,
00:22:29,503we don't have to worry so much about topology.
00:22:31,722You know, if I look at,
00:22:33,663let me just turn on lines for a minute.
    00:22:36,061So this works pretty good,
00:22:38,347but if I was going to do more modeling to this,
00:22:43,103it would be kind of a pain.
00:22:44,900I'd have to add a lot of polygons.
00:22:46,762It would be kind of a pain to add more details
00:22:51,321and bevels and stuff like that to this building.
00:22:53,620I'm deliberately building it this way
00:22:55,642because I know that texturing wise,
00:22:57,980the way we're gonna do it,
    00:22:59,679mapping the texture onto it,
00:23:01,082it's not gonna matter how precise the topology is.
00:23:04,479So we've got the front detail
    00:23:06,639and the front outline,
    00:23:07,898and those are locked together,
00:23:09,380and then we've got the side detail.
    00:23:11,503Let me turn this off.
    00:23:12,719We don't need that.
00:23:13,959Let me hide these for a minute.
    00:23:15,460Make sure that we've got,
    00:23:16,863here we go,
00:23:17,881and then I'm gonna take my front outline
00:23:20,820and I'm gonna extrude it a lot more,
    00:23:23,594and what I wanna do
00:23:25,579is try and line up this front building
00:23:29,002with this kind of placeholder that we have.
00:23:31,536So I'm gonna take the front detail and the front outline
00:23:35,738and let me move these up here.
00:23:38,143All right, let me start organizing this a little bit better.
00:23:41,103So this is building setup, let's say.
00:23:43,917We can turn it off, we don't need it right now.
00:23:45,919This is gonna be the actual final building.
00:23:49,697Then I'm gonna use that same axis center tool.
    00:23:53,901Let me hit execute,
    00:23:56,820and I think what's going on,
    00:23:59,719let's see here.
    00:24:03,439I wanna make sure
00:24:04,555that we're actually getting this in the right place.
    00:24:07,002Doesn't look like we are.
00:24:08,299So let me just do this the old fashion way.
    00:24:10,602I'm just gonna move this
00:24:12,623so that it's centered right on that building just like this.
00:24:18,362Move the axis to the middle.
00:24:20,239And then I can parent it under that placeholder again
    00:24:23,962and just zero everything out,
00:24:26,164and it'll be right in the middle.
    00:24:28,602Now I actually want it,
00:24:30,520let me move that null so it's kind of in the front
    00:24:34,474of the building there,
00:24:35,916and then I'm gonna scoot the building forward.
    00:24:38,559Get out of axis mode.
00:24:42,390I'm gonna scoot it so it lines up
00:24:44,420with the front of that building,
00:24:46,063and then I can go into my front outline
00:24:50,068and I can extrude that until it's as big
    00:24:55,458as the original building.
00:24:57,449Cool, so now we've started to actually get
00:25:01,359that final building and you can see that there's
00:25:03,919a ton of detail to it,
00:25:05,161and we're gonna do this side as well.
00:25:08,193Because we shifted things around a little bit in Illustrator
00:25:11,658it's not exactly the same size.
    00:25:15,577It's not the same width.
00:25:16,879So if we wanted to, we could just scale it a little bit
00:25:21,129just to try and match it.
00:25:23,498I mean it's gonna make the windows not quite as square,
    00:25:27,722but that's okay, that's not a big deal,
00:25:29,620and we could even make it a little bit taller
    00:25:31,537to kind of counteract that.
00:25:33,039Okay but I'm not gonna do that until the very end,
00:25:35,700but just so you know, we're gonna be able to tweak this.
00:25:37,998It's not gonna be an issue.
00:25:39,338So we've got the final building.
00:25:41,322All right let me hide the placeholder,
00:25:43,119and now we need to do the side of the building as well.
00:25:46,340All right so what I wanna do is,
00:25:48,423let me copy final building and just take these two pieces
00:25:52,282out of it, and we'll rename them side detail
    00:25:55,529and side outline.
    00:25:58,898I keep hitting the B,
    00:26:00,719and then I'm gonna use,
00:26:03,140I'm gonna use the side details spline here.
00:26:06,442So let me get rid of front detail and put in side detail,
    00:26:10,376and let me hide,
    00:26:13,209let's see here.
00:26:14,426I need to make sure that all of my coordinates
    00:26:16,925are making sense.
00:26:17,930So front detail is X is zero, Z is zero.
00:26:23,130So I need to make sure it's the same thing for side detail.
    00:26:26,022Zero zero, there we go,
    00:26:28,648and then for side outline.
    00:26:31,801So let me grab this.
    00:26:34,965Here's the side outline,
00:26:36,528and an easy thing to do is just parent it
    00:26:39,044to the front outline,
00:26:40,405and then zero out the X and the Z,
00:26:42,768and then just delete front outline.
00:26:45,466Now we've got the side detail.
00:26:49,189So this is actually the side of the building,
00:26:52,090and I can turn all this stuff off again.
00:26:55,589Building setup is off, so that's good,
00:26:57,626and let me turn off this front for a minutes.
00:27:00,090So here's the side of the building.
    00:27:01,789And what I wanna do
    00:27:03,328is in my final building,
00:27:06,832let me group these and this is the front
    00:27:09,988and this is the side,
00:27:11,509and for the side I wanna use my axis center tool again.
00:27:15,978And I wanna say point center.
00:27:22,368So it's gonna put that axis pretty much
    00:27:24,912right in the center.
00:27:26,032It's actually not directly in the center,
    00:27:27,792but that's okay, we'll fix it.
00:27:30,389That's actually not in the right spot at all.
00:27:33,007I want that right in the middle of this,
00:27:34,832and I'm kind of eyeballing it.
00:27:37,387We can try to use the axis center tool
    00:27:39,130but I think it's giving us trouble
00:27:42,152because we've got splines that are extruding.
00:27:46,424It's just not calculating it right.
    00:27:48,123So that's okay,
00:27:49,128but basically what I wanna do
00:27:50,787is take that side and rotate it 90 degrees.
00:27:54,341So you get something like this.
    00:27:57,086All right cool.
00:27:58,088So what I wanna do, and I wanna make sure
00:28:00,808that this is still kind of staying in that same footprint,
    00:28:04,526and it's not.
00:28:05,768So I need to take the side
00:28:07,545and I need to move it back like this,
00:28:11,086and then I need to go into the side outline
00:28:13,224and I need to extrude it less.
00:28:16,003There we go, so now it's inside that same footprint.
00:28:19,663And you can see the reason that I modeled it this way
00:28:22,904and I had the side spline be a little bit different
00:28:25,427than the front is because now
00:28:28,286you get this cool kind of contour to the building.
00:28:31,646It gives it a little bit more,
00:28:33,507it just makes it a little more interesting frankly.
00:28:36,692Now you've got something with a lot more
00:28:39,464kind of these little nooks and crannies to it.
00:28:42,091I loaded in into my picture viewer here,
00:28:45,326I loaded in the reference images
00:28:47,166and this was one of the references that I liked.
00:28:50,366Even though it doesn't really look much like this building,
00:28:52,921I liked how there were just little corners and pieces
00:28:56,126kind of jutting out kind of randomly.
00:28:58,008So I designed it that way in Illustrator
00:28:59,768so that it wouldn't line up perfectly
00:29:01,464and you'd get kind of an irregular shape to it.
00:29:03,704All right, and then the rest of this stuff
00:29:05,406we're gonna be using as texture reference in a minute.
00:29:07,966All right cool, so here's basically our building now.
00:29:11,907This side and the back don't have any detail.
    00:29:14,827That's okay.
    00:29:16,387We did an animatic
00:29:18,184and one of the beautiful things about doing an animatic
00:29:20,584is I already know we never see anything except the front
00:29:24,224and this side of the building,
00:29:25,747so who cares about the back,
    00:29:27,107who cares about this side.
00:29:28,328We don't have to do it,
00:29:29,619and that's why doing an animatic sometimes
00:29:31,486it can save you a ton of work
00:29:33,166'cause now I don't have to worry about that stuff.
00:29:35,367All right so here we go,
00:29:36,547and then looking at that building placeholder.
00:29:38,901I talked about potentially stretching this out a little bit
    00:29:44,408and we can try that.
00:29:45,763We can see what that's gonna look like
00:29:47,427if I took the front and I used my scale tool,
00:29:51,187and actually I can just do it this way.
00:29:53,427I'm just gonna scale it on X a little bit.
00:29:56,664We could see what that looks like.
00:29:58,067Let me turn that building placeholder off.
00:30:00,147If I made it a little bit more stretched out.
00:30:03,474I'm not sure it made that big of a difference to me,
00:30:06,738and I kinda like having a little bit more separation here,
00:30:10,263and then maybe I'll do the same thing on the side.
00:30:12,888Maybe I'll just stretch that a little bit too.
    00:30:14,846Not too much.
00:30:16,264Okay, cool, it just makes it a little bit blockier,
    00:30:18,664a little bit chunkier.
00:30:20,088Which kind of makes it fit better into the placeholder cube
    00:30:24,947that we already had.
    00:30:26,503So here's our final building.
00:30:27,886I'm gonna save this so it doesn't end up.
    00:30:32,063Building C4D.
    00:30:33,406Just in case, you know,
    00:30:34,889better safe than sorry.
    00:30:36,824Cool, and there we go.
    00:30:39,129So there's our building.
00:30:40,707Now I wanna add a little bit more detail to it
    00:30:42,968because I mentioned this before,
00:30:45,482but when things are supposed to look big,
00:30:47,928one thing that tells us they're big
00:30:49,848is we see tons and tons and tons of tiny little details.
00:30:52,462So what I wanna do is add a little bit more detail
    00:30:56,206around these windows.
    00:30:58,408So let's do this.
    00:30:59,608Let's go into the front
00:31:01,427and we've got this front detail spline here.
    00:31:04,800And what I wanna do.
    00:31:09,006Let me think about this.
    00:31:10,286Let's try this.
00:31:11,288Let's make a copy of this front detail spline.
    00:31:16,264I don't need the extrude,
    00:31:18,227and let's do this.
    00:31:19,384Let's take a rectangle spline.
00:31:23,384We need it to be very small.
    00:31:25,384Two by two,
00:31:26,904and let's put this down here.
00:31:28,968What I wanna do is try sweeping this rectangle
    00:31:33,683through that front detail.
00:31:35,966All right and this needs to be really really small.
    00:31:39,544And what it's doing,
00:31:42,126it needs to be even smaller so like .2 .2.
    00:31:44,744There we go.
    00:31:46,088See what it did?
00:31:47,187It just added these little kind of,
00:31:49,166just a little bit of trim to everything,
    00:31:51,526and that could be easily,
00:31:53,747so that this would be the front trim,
00:31:55,688and that's easily just another thing we could add
00:31:58,648a slightly different texture to it,
00:32:00,904and it just gives it a little bit more visual detail
00:32:05,368and because we already had those splines set up,
00:32:08,099it was really easy to do that too.
00:32:10,019All right and we could do the same thing on the other side.
00:32:12,499So we'll take the side detail
    00:32:14,723and copy that spline,
00:32:17,102and I can just copy and do the same thing here.
00:32:19,937We'll just swap out side detail and front detail.
00:32:23,160So now we get the side trim.
    00:32:25,742Cool.
00:32:27,160All right, and this is all,
00:32:28,819this is super easy to do.
    00:32:30,520This is working great.
    00:32:33,269Cool, so then,
00:32:35,520let's see what else we could do.
00:32:36,880Now there is gonna be a shot.
00:32:38,400Basically the way we see this building
00:32:40,683is we see it from this really low angle like this
00:32:43,994and then sometimes we see it from up top here.
00:32:47,857Now when we see it from up top here,
00:32:51,301this is gonna look really flat.
    00:32:54,043Which might be okay,
00:32:55,803but it'd be cool if there was
00:32:57,680a little bit more detail to it.
00:32:59,424So what I wanna do for this
    00:33:03,024is I want to have
00:33:05,024kind of like an extra piece up at the top here I think.
    00:33:08,605So what I'm gonna do,
00:33:10,843I'm just gonna manually build it.
    00:33:12,142So I'm gonna take a cube
00:33:13,643and I'm gonna shrink it down so it's not so gigantic,
00:33:17,378and I'm gonna move it up to the top of the building
00:33:23,100and put it pretty much right in the center,
00:33:26,320and I'm gonna scale it down like this.
00:33:31,600All right and basically what I wanna do,
00:33:35,163I wanna center this as best I can
00:33:37,539and I'm just kinda eyeballing this
00:33:39,381'cause again, the way we're gonna texture this
00:33:42,661and the way we're gonna be using it,
00:33:44,640we're gonna be able to get away with a lot.
    00:33:47,003Cool, okay.
00:33:48,539So I'm adding this extra piece.
    00:33:50,080I'm gonna make this editable,
00:33:52,464and then I am going to use my knife tool.
00:33:58,160Let me go into polygon mode here
00:33:59,995and I'm gonna hit MK to bring up my knife
00:34:01,920and I'm gonna set this to plane,
    00:34:03,904and I want the X Z,
    00:34:07,461no I want the Y Z.
    00:34:08,864There we go, I want the Y Z plane.
00:34:10,501Basically I wanna add some cuts.
00:34:12,421So I'm gonna just tell it to make three cuts and slice it.
    00:34:17,994What this is gonna do,
    00:34:20,019let's see here.
    00:34:22,581This isn't working the way I want.
    00:34:27,403Three cuts, slice it.
00:34:31,461Don't restrict to selection, there we go.
00:34:33,676All right, here what this is gonna let me do
00:34:35,904is just add cuts to this really easily.
    00:34:38,043Let me add four cuts,
00:34:40,363and what I'm trying to do
00:34:42,080is I wanna cut out the middle of this thing.
00:34:44,909So I need to try and get sort of an even kind of
    00:34:50,816alignment of these cuts.
    00:34:52,775Let's try six.
    00:34:54,348That aught to work.
    00:34:55,608Okay cool.
00:34:56,522So now I have all these cuts
00:34:58,042and what I can then do,
00:34:59,263I need to take this cube and just scoot it over.
    00:35:01,402It's not centered.
00:35:03,299It's not really all that centered for me.
    00:35:06,900Cube, there we go.
    00:35:10,260That's better.
00:35:11,642Okay and then I'm gonna take these polygons
    00:35:16,362and these polygons,
00:35:18,180and I'm going to extrude those out like that.
    00:35:23,135And then I'm gonna take
    00:35:27,082all of these top polygons
00:35:28,874and I'm gonna do an inner extrude.
    00:35:30,500MW, inner extrude.
00:35:31,839Make sure preserve groups is on.
00:35:35,228All right so it does it like this.
00:35:38,394And I want a little bit of a lip to it,
00:35:40,442and then I'm gonna do another extrude.
00:35:42,077MT is extrude, and I'm gonna extrude this down.
    00:35:46,143Cool, okay.
00:35:47,599Now I've got this extra little piece of geometry
00:35:51,856and I'm gonna try and center this a little bit better
    00:35:54,368on that building.
00:35:56,479You can see it's not really centered right down here.
00:35:58,762So I'm just gonna grab it and just gently
    00:36:02,100nudge it over on X.
    00:36:04,863There we go, cool.
00:36:06,420All right, so now I've got this little top pice,
00:36:09,228and what I could then do is just put some little,
00:36:12,835maybe like some little greebles in there.
    00:36:15,423Greeble is a term.
00:36:17,343I'm not sure exactly where it came from.
00:36:19,114I heard it used when talking about Star Wars.
00:36:21,162It's basically just little meaningless details
00:36:24,340that you add to something to make it look bigger.
00:36:27,482So what I wanna do is I'm just gonna make a cube,
    00:36:30,719and I'm gonna make that,
00:36:32,282I'm gonna make it really small.
00:36:34,143It's probably gonna need to be smaller.
00:36:35,802Let's try one by one by one,
00:36:37,642and I'm gonna put that inside of a cloner,
00:36:41,515and first thing I need to do,
00:36:42,959I need to take this cube that I made up here
00:36:45,679and I need to save these polygons as a selection.
00:36:49,039So I'm gonna go to select and say set selection,
00:36:51,640and I'm gonna call this roof floor.
00:36:56,239What I wanna do is I wanna clone this little tiny cube
    00:37:00,497in object mode.
00:37:02,420I wanna clone it onto this.
    00:37:04,222Let me rename this roof.
    00:37:06,122This is my roof object.
00:37:07,598I wanna clone it onto the roof.
    00:37:09,786Distribution on the surface,
00:37:11,776and for the selection I want this selection tag,
00:37:14,522and then I can just crank this up
00:37:16,783and you can make it even more if you want to.
00:37:19,220I just want a bunch of them,
00:37:21,332and then I'm just gonna call these greebles.
00:37:24,575Greebles and then add a random effector to that
    00:37:31,537that is effecting the scale.
00:37:34,442All right, they can all be slightly different shapes
    00:37:37,503and stuff like that.
    00:37:39,467It's just gonna add,
00:37:42,340and they're all gonna be the same texture
00:37:45,002so they're not gonna stick out as much like that.
    00:37:47,300It's just gonna give it
    00:37:49,220a little bit extra.
00:37:50,343You could see here there's one sticking out of there.
    00:37:53,426Which I don't want.
00:37:55,393So I'm gonna just go into the seed
00:37:58,276and just change it until that doesn't happen.
    00:38:00,778There we go.
00:38:01,834I don't care what it looks like on this side or in the back
    00:38:04,479or anything like that.
00:38:05,835All I care about is what does it look like for this shot
00:38:09,055when we're looking down at the plant.
    00:38:11,535Cool, all right.
    00:38:12,959So here's our building,
00:38:15,100and you could keep going and adding more detail
00:38:18,618but I think that for our purposes,
00:38:20,938this is gonna work pretty good.
00:38:23,516All right, so here's the front, here's the side,
00:38:25,876and then we've got all this stuff on top.
    00:38:28,879Beautiful.
    00:38:30,015So we've got this building
00:38:31,534and now we need to texture it.
00:38:34,089So I just copied the building that we just made
00:38:37,876and I'm just gonna paste it right in here,
00:38:40,592and oh my god look at that,
00:38:42,532because of the way we modeled it
00:38:44,432we made sure to use our placeholder building as a reference,
00:38:46,895it pastes it right in place,
00:38:48,772and I can just turn my place holder building off
    00:38:51,408and here we go.
00:38:52,414Here is the building we just made
00:38:53,972with all the detail, all those windows,
00:38:56,117all that beautiful stuff ready to go.
00:38:59,060I'm just gonna save this as a new scene.
00:39:03,994So this is gonna be scene01,
00:39:06,095and we'll call this building working.
00:39:09,956All right, so let's just do a quick render here.
00:39:13,452So I've got my basic crappy settings here,
    00:39:16,815and I'm gonna use,
00:39:18,327I'm actually gonna switch this to the physical renderer.
00:39:20,852I'm gonna leave global illumination on,
00:39:23,029and what I found is that sometimes the physical renderer
00:39:26,874actually renders faster than the standard renderer
    00:39:29,994for certain situations.
    00:39:31,914If you have blurry reflections.
00:39:34,090Which that happens when you have something,
00:39:36,174when you have a reflectance channel
    00:39:38,369with a roughness setting,
00:39:40,292that makes the reflections a little bit blurry,
00:39:42,356and the physical renderer actually handles that faster,
00:39:45,535and I just wanted to do a quick preview of this
00:39:49,215before we really get cranking on the textures
00:39:51,889just to see overall how this is fitting into the scene
00:39:56,130and just get a rough idea.
00:39:57,951Now here's the thing about doing texturing.
00:40:00,852Texturing relies on so many different things.
00:40:03,900It obviously relies on the texture,
00:40:06,975but it's also gonna rely on things like the lighting
    00:40:11,434and the modeling,
00:40:13,020and things being reflected in the texture.
00:40:16,047So the environment it's in plays into it.
00:40:17,892It's not a fast process because you can make a texture
00:40:21,812that looks great on your little preview down here,
00:40:24,554but then in the scene it looks terrible.
00:40:27,249What I wanna show you is just some strategies
00:40:29,871that I kinda use when I approach texturing.
00:40:32,862So what I wanna do is copy,
00:40:35,435I'm gonna copy the fill light, this light,
    00:40:40,672the sky light,
00:40:41,929and then I'm gonna copy the ground and the mountains.
    00:40:47,952I'm gonna copy those,
00:40:49,248put them in a brand new scene like this,
00:40:52,149and scoot kind of far back like this.
    00:40:55,244Here we go.
    00:40:56,949All right so here's what I'm doing.
00:40:58,709I want a new scene here I'm kind of,
00:41:01,710and I don't even really need those mountains.
00:41:03,829I'm just gonna delete the mountains.
00:41:05,593I just want the ground and the sky.
00:41:07,613All right, and basically what I'm gonna use this sene for,
    00:41:10,476this scene's gonna render a lot faster
    00:41:12,496'cause there's a lot less in it.
00:41:14,874I don't even have global elimination turned on,
    00:41:17,734but what I wanna do,
00:41:19,454and let me actually turn off this displacer.
00:41:21,937Let me make this a lot simpler.
00:41:23,713What I wanna do is basically have an object
    00:41:27,617that's very simple,
00:41:28,817like a cube or something like this.
00:41:30,694Actually, an object that I really like to use,
00:41:33,094I think it gives you a good idea for textures,
00:41:36,396is you take a cube, you make it editable,
    00:41:38,673you select every single face,
00:41:41,313and you do an inter extrude and then an extrude.
00:41:45,494This simple shape for whatever reason,
00:41:49,133and let me make sure my fill light
00:41:50,988is somewhere where it's gonna be actually useful.
00:41:55,473Let me turn this back to,
    00:41:57,036let's see here.
    00:41:58,716Lines, here we go.
    00:41:59,857So that fill light,
    00:42:01,697let me move that back.
00:42:07,451Just make sure that it's actually gonna be
    00:42:09,857doing something to this shape.
00:42:12,454Okay so what's cool about this shape
00:42:14,534is it's got a few contours to it,
00:42:16,723and it can cast shadows on itself and stuff like that,
00:42:19,878and it'll just give you a decent idea
    00:42:22,374of what a texture's gonna do in a scene
00:42:24,518but it's gonna render super fast.
00:42:26,133So I need to turn global illumination on
00:42:28,657because that is definitely going to affect
    00:42:31,539the way a texture's going to look,
00:42:34,252and I also wanna make sure,
00:42:36,358before I start doing this a million times,
00:42:38,257that I have auto load turned on.
00:42:41,024And I can say skip pre pass if present,
00:42:44,046and this is gonna let me crank out renders a lot faster
    00:42:48,793over time.
00:42:50,249I could also tweak the global illumination settings
00:42:52,633to make them a little bit lower,
00:42:55,011but you can see that the global illumination,
00:42:57,390it really does affect the look.
00:42:58,931So I wanna make sure that's on when I'm looking at
    00:43:01,569my textures here.
    00:43:02,830Okay and just for comparison,
00:43:04,393let's do a standard render and see if that's faster
    00:43:06,929in this case.
00:43:07,927In some cases it is faster.
00:43:09,981And because I don't have a texture on this thing,
00:43:12,270it actually probably is gonna be faster in this case.
00:43:14,809What's taking the most time is just the GI pre pass.
    00:43:18,336Cool, all right.
00:43:19,869So let's talk about textures for a minute.
00:43:22,110What kind of texture do we want on this building?
00:43:25,353So these are some of the reference images
    00:43:27,550that I pulled from Pinterest.
    00:43:29,364Now I really like this.
00:43:30,990It's rough and gritty but it's also kinda shiny
00:43:35,033and I like how there's kind of like a regularity to it.
    00:43:39,227It looks man made.
    00:43:41,230I like this too.
00:43:44,255I mean it's kind of a completely different shape
    00:43:47,049for a building,
00:43:48,069but I just liked how much detail there was to it.
00:43:50,371This was the original building that I sort of modeled
00:43:52,670ours after, and you can't really see much texture there.
    00:43:55,306Here's another one.
00:43:56,771Again, it's like it's got this lattice around it
00:43:59,630that just really makes it feel dense visually.
00:44:02,485And I liked this because the surface.
00:44:04,489It's almost like a brushed metal.
    00:44:06,649Kind of blurry reflections
00:44:09,846but a little bit shiny and glossy.
00:44:11,491I kinda wanted to capture some of that,
    00:44:13,785a little bit of this.
00:44:15,273So for this type of a texture
00:44:17,673where it looks like slate or something like that,
00:44:20,969you can try to mimic that using shaders
00:44:24,531inside of Cinema 4D like the noise shader, for example.
00:44:28,062But a lot of times you're gonna just have to,
    00:44:30,370you're gonna be fighting that.
00:44:31,710You don't really wanna be doing that
    00:44:34,030and trying to mimic something
00:44:35,411when you could just go to Cgtextures.com
00:44:39,475or any other sight that you like to find textures
00:44:42,686and just find a good texture.
    00:44:45,331So let's just take a look.
    00:44:47,710Let's go to,
00:44:49,971let's see I mean I can just type in slate
    00:44:53,130and see what pops up.
00:44:54,851And you see okay you've got all these great textures
00:44:57,491and a lot of them are already tiled for you.
    00:45:00,734Look at this one.
    00:45:03,059That's pretty interesting.
00:45:04,435I like it but I feel like it's a little bit
    00:45:06,995too old school looking.
    00:45:08,798It looks like a roof.
00:45:10,355It doesn't look like the side of a building.
    00:45:13,050So that's not exactly what I want.
00:45:14,970So let's just try not granite
    00:45:18,297but let's try,
    00:45:19,475well I don't know, let's try granite.
00:45:21,134See what happens if I type granite into the search box.
00:45:25,054Yeah there's some really nice ones.
00:45:26,671There's some smooth ones like you'd find
    00:45:28,617no your countertop.
    00:45:30,313There's stuff like this
    00:45:31,897which is kind of cool.
00:45:33,071I kind of like that brick texture,
00:45:35,513and then you've got something like this.
00:45:39,054The only problem with this is it's not tiled
    00:45:42,115and I could tile it.
00:45:44,814I really like the texture of it though.
    00:45:46,814It's beautiful.
00:45:48,057All right so I'm gonna leave that one open,
    00:45:50,355but let's keep looking.
00:45:51,492Let's see what else we got.
    00:45:53,177There's another page here.
00:45:54,718All right and what I'm looking for
00:45:57,059ideally is one that says set tiled,
    00:46:00,019'cause if it's tiled,
    00:46:01,257like this one.
    00:46:02,259Set tiled huge.
00:46:03,938Let me just take a look at that.
00:46:05,332What this means is that this is already a seamless texture
    00:46:09,118that I can use.
    00:46:11,377And if I clicked 3D tiling preview,
    00:46:13,816this is pretty cool too.
00:46:15,059This will show you when this texture's tiled
    00:46:17,395what it looks like.
00:46:18,494I know it looks pretty good.
00:46:19,875I like the roughness of it.
00:46:21,155It's got a ton of detail,
00:46:23,112and I can use this texture kind of as a base
    00:46:26,217to do some cool stuff.
00:46:27,497So let's go back to this texture and let's say that's it.
    00:46:30,457That's the one I want,
00:46:31,715and I am going to hop in here and download this,
00:46:36,532and you can get a free membership,
00:46:38,494which let's you download basically small versions
    00:46:43,653of textures,
00:46:45,193and then you can pay a tiny amount of money
00:46:48,025and get much more high resolution.
    00:46:49,971I highly recommend CG Textures.
    00:46:52,153It's an amazing amazing resource.
00:46:54,051So what I can then do is come in here
    00:46:56,975and we can say building,
00:46:59,529and I can start just by putting that texture
    00:47:03,689in the color channel.
00:47:05,049All right so that's gonna probably have ended up
    00:47:06,969on my desktop.
    00:47:08,169So let's copy that in.
00:47:09,891And I'm just gonna say no for now.
    00:47:12,473And I'm gonna put this
    00:47:15,854not on the ground.
    00:47:16,974Sorry, on this object.
00:47:18,995Okay, now first thing you're gonna notice
00:47:21,613is the texture's not gonna map properly at first.
    00:47:24,195It's gonna look incorrect.
00:47:26,190So what we're gonna need to do is fix that,
00:47:28,809but I wanna show you what it looks like.
00:47:30,793So if this ever happens to you
00:47:32,329you'll know how to fix it.
00:47:33,684See how it's stretching the texture right here?
00:47:36,089That's because by default, Cinema 4D tries to use UVs
    00:47:40,969to apply a texture,
00:47:42,188and if you don't know what UVs are,
    00:47:43,668there's actually another tutorial,
00:47:45,331an old on on Schoolofmotion.com that explains
    00:47:47,647what UVs are.
    00:47:48,750You could find that,
00:47:50,110but I'm gonna change the projection to cubic,
00:47:52,393and that is the projection we're gonna use
    00:47:54,350for our building as well,
    00:47:55,710and what that's gonna do
00:47:57,833is it's gonna let us not have to worry
00:48:01,529about the shape of the building.
00:48:03,390It's just gonna apply it in a way
00:48:05,089where it's gonna look perfect on every single side.
00:48:08,531Cubing mapping looks good for things
    00:48:11,069that are sort of cubic.
    00:48:12,590There we go.
00:48:13,592So now you've got this nice texture
00:48:15,353but there's not a lot of variation to it.
    00:48:17,310It's really
    00:48:19,121it's just flat looking.
00:48:20,809I mean it looks like basically you took
00:48:22,670a sticker of something that looks like granite
    00:48:24,750and put it on there.
00:48:25,950So the next thing I wanna do
00:48:27,651is get into some of the more elaborate details here.
00:48:31,402So I have color, and I also have reflectance.
00:48:34,888Now reflectance in Cinema 4D 16 actually includes
00:48:39,731both your specular and your reflections.
00:48:42,568So you've got the default specular
00:48:45,208and I'm gonna change that to a Beckman layer.
00:48:49,768So what I wanna do is basically have
00:48:52,968some specularity and some reflection on here
00:48:55,566and I wanna use this texture
00:48:57,310that I've already started using to make
    00:49:00,766the reflections and the specularity
    00:49:02,905look a little more realistic.
00:49:04,293So what I could do, for example,
    00:49:06,168is I could go to
    00:49:09,950my reflection strength.
00:49:12,645I don't wanna key frame that.
00:49:14,206I do not want to do that.
    00:49:15,587Let me remove animation there.
    00:49:17,707What I wanna do
00:49:19,331is I wanna put a texture underneath reflection strength.
00:49:24,291So I'm gonna just load in that same bitmap
00:49:27,011and I'm gonna turn reflection strength up to 50%,
00:49:30,611oh let me just turn it up to 100%
00:49:32,248so you can see what it does
    00:49:33,524and before I do that,
00:49:34,767I wanna go into this texture
00:49:36,265and I wanna turn the black point up a little bit
00:49:39,447and the white point down to get more contrast.
00:49:43,143Just to show you what this is gonna do.
00:49:45,859It's basically gonna take the brightness of this texture
00:49:49,527and parts that are bright are gonna be very reflective
00:49:53,521and parts that are dark are not gonna be very reflective,
00:49:56,160and it's gonna break up this texture a lot
00:50:00,719and make it a lot more realistic
    00:50:02,225because in real life,
00:50:03,943things are not generally uniformly reflective
    00:50:07,994or uniformly shiny.
    00:50:10,923There's variation to it.
00:50:12,578Now you can see that the dark parts of that texture
00:50:16,638are not as shiny as the rest,
00:50:19,367and it's gonna give this a lot more of a realistic look.
00:50:22,364So I basically wanna go through and use features like that
    00:50:26,204to dial this in.
00:50:28,161I could also, let me come in here.
    00:50:31,105So we've got reflection strength.
    00:50:32,705You've also got specular strength
00:50:34,385and you could do the exact same thing.
    00:50:35,676I'm gonna copy that channel
00:50:38,651and I'm going to paste it
    00:50:45,164into my specular strength
00:50:46,679and turn my specular strength up.
    00:50:48,444Now reflection strength,
00:50:49,719let me turn that down to 50.
00:50:51,116Then I've got roughness at 50 right now too.
00:50:53,585Which means that it's not a perfect reflection.
00:50:56,023It's kind of blurring it a little bit.
00:50:57,825And I can also use a bump in the reflectance channel
00:51:01,917to break up the reflection without actually
    00:51:05,079creating a bump map.
00:51:06,442Now in this case, what I actually wanna do
    00:51:08,401is create a bump map.
00:51:09,681So I'm gonna go turn on bump
00:51:11,121and I'm gonna paste that same texture in there,
    00:51:14,865and let's leave the strength at 20
    00:51:16,861and let's just do a quick render
00:51:18,702and see what that looks like,
00:51:20,401and hopefully you're starting to see the process here.
00:51:22,941You know you start with a photographic texture
00:51:26,343and then you can kind of get that looking the way you want
00:51:30,478and then once you're happy with it,
00:51:32,764copy that same texture into other channels.
00:51:37,264Into your reflectance channel to control reflection strength
    00:51:40,945and specular strength and bump
00:51:43,025and all that kind of stuff.
00:51:44,523What this is gonna end up doing
00:51:46,321is giving you a texture that has a lot more richness
    00:51:49,825and variation to it.
00:51:52,064I don't have ambient aclusion turned on
00:51:54,785but once I turn that on,
00:51:56,317that's gonna really accent these intersecting parts here,
00:51:59,761but this is already feeling pretty cool
00:52:02,284and I know that this is gonna feel good
00:52:04,124as a base texture for me,
00:52:06,933but I also want a little bit of that tiling to it.
    00:52:10,951I want it to feel,
00:52:12,790I want it to have a little bit of this quality to it.
00:52:16,598Let me pull up my picture viewer.
00:52:18,038I wanna have some of this in there too.
00:52:19,980So how could we do that?
    00:52:22,135So what I could do,
00:52:23,561is I could go into my bump channel, for example.
00:52:27,499So the bump channel just has this texture in it.
00:52:30,358I could set this to layer.
    00:52:33,913Now what that's gonna do
00:52:35,158is it's gonna basically give me
00:52:36,859a little mini Photoshop inside of Cinema 4D.
00:52:38,977So the first layer in my mini Photoshop is that bitmap,
00:52:42,242but I can then add another shader on top of it.
00:52:45,176So for example, I could go to surfaces
00:52:49,681and I could say, add tiles.
00:52:52,766And then I can go into my tiles options
00:52:55,137and let's turn the tile colors to,
00:52:57,829let's actually do them as black,
00:53:00,117and we'll do the grout as white, like this,
    00:53:04,479and actually, you know what,
00:53:05,878let me try it backwards first.
00:53:08,008So I want tiles to be white
00:53:09,827and the grout to be black.
00:53:12,539Then I'm going to multiply that on top of
    00:53:17,448this bitmap that's already there.
00:53:19,384All right, this is just for the bump
00:53:22,163and you can see already kind of a preview
    00:53:24,206of what's happening,
00:53:25,413and let me set my output to 960 by 540 here,
00:53:30,406and let me turn on that physical renderer
00:53:33,267'cause I think it's gonna start to give us
00:53:35,523a little bit of a speed advantage,
00:53:38,104and I'm just gonna do a quick render here
00:53:40,744to see what that bump now with that tile kind of on there
    00:53:46,526what that's doing.
    00:53:47,764Wow, look at that.
00:53:48,846You see how it's stacking the layers.
00:53:51,284It's giving us this very interesting looking texture.
    00:53:54,968Now those tiles, they feel,
00:53:57,304I like the grooves a little bit too thick
    00:54:00,024and also where there's a groove
00:54:01,587I want things to be a little darker
00:54:03,326so I'm gonna do two things.
00:54:05,225One, I'm gonna come into the tiles
00:54:06,766and I'm gonna take the grout width down to about,
00:54:09,527I don't know, let's do half of that,
    00:54:12,466and the bevel width,
00:54:13,744I don't want as much of a bevel either.
00:54:16,303So I'm just making those a little bit thinner, those lines.
00:54:20,273Cool, and that looks a little bit better to me.
    00:54:23,737All right you can see,
00:54:25,139I just made those a little bit thinner.
00:54:27,417Cool, then what I wanna do
00:54:29,198is let me just go ahead and copy this channel
00:54:34,194and I'm gonna activate the diffusion channel
00:54:36,894and diffusion lets you break up,
00:54:39,875it basically lets you make things
00:54:42,558overall a little bit duller based on a texture.
00:54:46,050So I am going to paste that channel
00:54:49,091and you can see that that's gonna make those grooves
    00:54:52,572a lot darker.
00:54:55,110Maybe what I can do too,
    00:54:58,449let me go into layer.
00:54:59,595Let me just turn off bitmap for a minute
    00:55:01,513and turn this to normal.
00:55:03,661So that it's not affecting the texture at all,
    00:55:05,950it's just affecting the grooves
00:55:07,694and if I change this mix strength
00:55:09,430you can see what it's doing.
00:55:10,670I just want it to darken those grooves just a little bit.
    00:55:13,870There we go.
00:55:15,400So you've got this pretty elaborate looking texture here
00:55:19,887and I'm just curious what that's gonna look like
    00:55:23,913on the building.
00:55:25,832So let me just go ahead and just do a quick test.
00:55:29,811I'm gonna take, I'm gonna go back to this scene,
00:55:32,687I'm going to copy my final building.
    00:55:38,189I'm gonna paste it here,
    00:55:40,831and let's find that building.
    00:55:43,534Where is that building here?
    00:55:44,937Turn this cube off.
00:55:46,115All right so there's the final building.
00:55:48,217And I'm gonna take this texture
00:55:49,774and just put it on there,
    00:55:52,191and I'm gonna do a quick render.
00:55:54,334Now the scale of the texture's probably gonna need
    00:55:57,678to be adjusted now
00:55:59,051'cause that building was so much smaller
00:56:01,054than that little cube that I was playing around with.
00:56:03,873So you can see that the tiles are way too big.
00:56:06,830So I need to come in here and say tiles instead of one
    00:56:10,958let's try 10 by 10.
00:56:12,675So I'm basically scaling that texture down
    00:56:15,054by a factor of 10,
00:56:17,257and that's starting to look okay.
00:56:19,654I probably need to make sure
    00:56:21,598that I'm mapping this correctly.
00:56:23,255This needs to be cubic mapping.
    00:56:25,657And let's try that.
00:56:27,253So you can see that this process,
00:56:29,897there we go, that's looking kinds cool.
    00:56:32,115Yeah I'm kinda digging that.
    00:56:34,137Let's see here.
00:56:37,359Let's see when we get in close here.
00:56:39,109Right now all of the parts of the building
    00:56:42,069have the same texture,
00:56:43,552and again I'm gonna make the inside of these windows
    00:56:45,870have a different texture,
00:56:47,848and actually let me show you how I'm gonna do that
    00:56:50,789by the way.
00:56:51,667So if we just made a new texture here
    00:56:55,139and we said windows.
00:56:57,328For the windows, maybe we want a dark kind of a cool
00:57:01,905colored window and we want that to have Beckman reflection.
00:57:07,740We are gonna want frenal on that,
    00:57:09,639and since those are glass,
    00:57:11,309we're gonna use dielectric,
    00:57:13,873and then for reflection strength
00:57:16,374we can turn that up quite a bit.
00:57:18,690Roughness can go down to zero
    00:57:21,151'cause they're windows.
    00:57:22,654They're gonna be very reflective.
00:57:24,172Maybe we can make them tan just so they're a little,
00:57:26,266or no you know what, zero.
    00:57:28,026Let's leave it at zero.
    00:57:29,12275 reflection strength.
00:57:30,940So what I wanna do is take this window texture now
00:57:33,138and just put it on the front outline.
00:57:35,943Let me hide these other pieces for a minute,
00:57:38,767and I wanna tell it to only apply that texture
    00:57:42,376to the C1 face.
00:57:44,460Now it's not showing up correctly right now
00:57:47,122and the reason is the way textures are kind of
    00:57:52,242evaluated in Cinema 4D,
00:57:55,319it depends on the order that the tags are coming.
00:57:57,543So if I wanna get really specific,
00:57:59,863what I need to do is have this texture tag
    00:58:01,859on the front outline
00:58:03,500and then have this texture come after it.
00:58:06,498Let me turn off the side as well,
00:58:08,524and if I hit render now,
    00:58:10,219you'll be able to see
    00:58:13,761that I've got a totally different texture
00:58:16,700on the front of this thing than I do on the side.
00:58:19,143I've got this shiny kind of reflecty one,
    00:58:23,180and then on the side,
00:58:24,642and you can see it's acting like a window.
00:58:26,423It's a very dark window actually.
00:58:27,940Probably a little bit too dark.
00:58:29,623So let me actually dock this picture viewer.
00:58:32,355Have a feeling we'll be using it quite a bit.
    00:58:35,816Okay cool.
00:58:37,012Let me take the color brighten it up a little bit.
    00:58:42,327We'll just do another,
    00:58:43,971another little render here.
    00:58:46,771Cool, that's better.
    00:58:49,626All right.
    00:58:52,663Okay cool.
00:58:53,907So we've got our beautiful glassy texture,
00:58:59,907and then when we turn the front detail back on,
    00:59:02,841copy this texture over it,
00:59:04,841and let me turn the front trim back on.
00:59:07,039Copy that same texture on it temporarily,
00:59:09,465even though it is going to change,
    00:59:11,683and now you can see,
00:59:13,523and I'll have to probably zoom in so you can see this
    00:59:15,347a little closer,
00:59:16,627but you know, for looking at a shot like this or something,
    00:59:19,827and we render that.
00:59:21,587You're gonna be able to see reflections here
00:59:25,166where as you're seeing the tile everywhere else.
00:59:29,437Cool, so we've got two different textures working here.
00:59:33,523Okay so now here's another thing.
00:59:35,203This trim is feeling a little small to me.
00:59:38,963Especially when we're close to the building.
00:59:40,707So I'm gonna take the trim.
    00:59:42,505Oh let's knock that up.
    00:59:44,105Let's try .5 and .5 and I want a different texture
    00:59:46,543on it too.
00:59:47,917I don't know, I'm thinking just kind of
    00:59:49,876maybe a matte texture that's maybe
00:59:53,139a little bit brighter than this.
    00:59:56,256So we'll just make a new texture.
    00:59:58,808We'll call this trim,
01:00:00,732and maybe we'll make that texture a little bit cool.
01:00:05,262Just a tiny tiny bit cool
01:00:08,293and kind of in this mid tone range.
    01:00:11,205I'm gonna go to reflectance
01:00:12,909and I'm gonna change this to Beckman
01:00:15,049and I'm gonna leave the roughness up
01:00:16,947and I want a little bit of specularity
01:00:18,931but I want it to be,
    01:00:20,941I don't know, let's say 20% reflective,
01:00:23,262but I want it to be pretty rough.
01:00:25,366I want it to feel matte.
    01:00:28,067Cool, and then let's see,
01:00:29,411oh and then of course I need to put that texture
01:00:31,347on the front trim and render that.
01:00:34,345And this is gonna give us a little bit more contrast
01:00:37,070on the trim and break things up for us a little bit,
01:00:41,543and that's starting to feel pretty interesting.
01:00:44,665There's a lot of detail going on
01:00:46,265and I may actually want to make these tiles
    01:00:50,042a little bit smaller.
01:00:51,587I'm gonna be doing a lot of these little test renders
01:00:54,710to try and see how this building looks from different angles
01:01:01,402and from the top and from the bottom
01:01:03,145and all that kind of stuff.
01:01:05,347It looks like something got a little bit screwy here.
    01:01:09,747This looks like it,
    01:01:11,049oh I know what's going on.
01:01:12,686I have my side turned off.
    01:01:13,987There we go.
01:01:14,985So I'm gonna have to do the same thing with the side
01:01:16,825to get those textures on and all that kind of that,
01:01:18,985but you could see we're already starting to get
01:01:21,449a lot of visual interest here,
01:01:23,427and let me try to frame up something remotely resembling
    01:01:27,625that first shot.
    01:01:29,291I'm gonna take a camera
01:01:31,449and we are gonna make this a 15 mil lens
01:01:34,926'cause that's what it is in the beginning,
01:01:37,209and we're kinda looking up at the building like this,
01:01:40,587and I'm gonna turn on ambient aclusion now
01:01:44,040so we can see kinda what the affect of that is gonna be,
01:01:47,641and let's just do a quick rest render,
01:01:50,307or it might not be that quick.
01:01:51,667Let's see what we're getting here.
01:01:55,185Cool, and you can see the render times
01:01:57,407are starting to creep a little bit
01:01:59,185because now we've got all the bells and whistles turned on.
01:02:01,545Ambient aclusion is definitely a little bit of a render hog,
01:02:05,983but it adds so much nice detail to this stuff,
01:02:10,103and we've got a lot of really nice kind of visual density
    01:02:15,065happening here.
01:02:16,067It's gonna be kind of a really interesting thing
01:02:18,521for your eye to look at.
    01:02:19,705The trim, I feel like there's a little bit
    01:02:21,667too much contrast there.
01:02:23,395So I'm gonna play with that,
01:02:25,486but this is basically the process
01:02:27,566that I am gonna follow to nail the texture of this building,
01:02:31,977and now you're gonna watch me work really fast
01:02:34,947for a long time while you hear me do voiceover.
01:02:39,542This part of the process takes a while
    01:02:41,624because I'm constantly rendering, and re-rendering,
01:02:44,115and re-rendering to try and find that look
01:02:47,326that feels the way I want it to.
01:02:49,289This process is sometimes called look development
01:02:52,625and there are some newer tools out there
01:02:54,435like the Octane renderer or Thia renderer
01:02:57,027that can speed this up using your GPU to render faster,
01:03:00,601but I didn't wanna bite off too many new things
    01:03:03,487for this series,
01:03:04,627so I just kept it simple
01:03:06,227and just used the built in Cinema 4D renderer,
    01:03:09,245which is great.
    01:03:10,767After tweaking and rendering
    01:03:12,569and tweaking and rendering,
    01:03:14,025I ended up with this.
    01:03:16,307I like it.
    01:03:17,323There's a lot of contrast.
01:03:18,905There's plenty of detail in the texture
01:03:20,926to help sell the size of the building,
    01:03:23,187and once the camera moves
01:03:24,947and we see light reflecting off the building,
01:03:27,342I think it's gonna look very interesting visually.
01:03:30,126Now next up we have the plant.
01:03:32,809The plant has to be designed a lot more deliberately
    01:03:36,126because it's giong to move.
01:03:38,067The building will just sit there looking cool and ominous
    01:03:40,704but the plant is alive.
01:03:42,425So it should be able to sway with the breeze.
    01:03:44,787Open or close its pedals,
    01:03:46,649bend forwards or backwards,
01:03:48,446and at the end of the piece,
01:03:49,966it actually has to grow on right in front of us,
01:03:51,987so it needs to be modeled and rigged to do that.
01:03:55,966So how do we do that?
    01:03:57,702(relaxing music)
    01:04:10,606(upbeat music)
