Photoshop & Illustrator Training For Motion Designers
Start in the right place
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are essential tools for every Motion Designer to master. Almost every Motion Graphics project out there passes through these programs in one way or another. They are insanely powerful pieces of software, but learning Photoshop or Illustrator can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin.
This course makes learning Photoshop and Illustrator easy and fun. Starting on the very first day, you’ll create art based on real world jobs and get tons of experience working with the same tools that professional Motion Designers use everyday.
Build strong foundations and make new connections
With each new lesson you’ll unlock new skills, building off of what you’ve learned before. You’ll have the opportunity to put that new knowledge to the test with exercises based on jobs that you will encounter in the real world as a professional Motion Designer.
In the session you’ll be connected to an amazing group of students from all over the world. You’ll make new friends, build professional connections, share virtual high-fives, and help each other hone your skills.

Jake Bartlett is a motion designer and online instructor based in Denver Colorado. After working at a production company in Los Angeles for nearly five years he decided to quit his day job to pursue the freelancer’s life and teaching animation online. His creativity runs on coffee, lego bricks and “Weird Al” Yankovic.
Throughout his career he’s had the opportunity to work for clients like Coca-Cola, Twitter, Skype, Evernote, HGTV, NatGeo Wild and Norah Jones.
When he’s not working Jake enjoys going to parks with his family and longboarding with his Dalmatian, Pixel.

Realistic, useful examples and challenges.
Too often, training programs for Photoshop and Illustrator aren’t really meant for those on The Path to MoGraph. This course changes that. We’ve built a course that is focused on getting you started with creating artwork that can be put in motion. You’ll get real world inspired projects that simulate the kinds of challenges that a Motion Designer faces every day. By the end of this course you’ll have the foundations you need to be confident in the software and on the job.
Share, help, and grow together.
Going through a School of Motion course is a one-of-a-kind experience. You’ll be hanging out (virtually, of course) with a group of other aspiring Motion Designers in a private Facebook Group. You’ll be inspired, encouraged, and even critiqued by your fellow students and TA’s.
You’ll have support and a large group of new friends to geek out with, but you’ll also benefit from looking at tons of work. You’ll see dozens of other takes on the same project you have, plus concepts and designs to inspire you.
Technical and Creative Help from Pros
We know you're just starting your journey into the world of Photoshop and Illustrator, so we've brought on some professional Motion Designers to help you with any creative or technical questions you encounter during the course.
You’ll regularly upload work-in-progress to our Homework Locker and get precise comments and draw-overs on your work. You’ll get suggestions and notes that will push your work to the next level and give you a taste of the revision process.
Each Wednesday we’ll release a new episode of “The Dojo”, a video series that checks in on your session’s work and highlights some of the best work that’s been produced so far. Your instructor, Jake, will also dive a bit deeper into each topic, opening up project files, fixing common issues, and giving pro-tips that you can start using right away.
Get valuable insights from industry pros
Our courses always feature a podcast series that fills in the gaps in your knowledge and keeps you inspired. This series features interviews with amazingly talented illustrators and designers, Sarah Beth Morgan, TBD, and Steve Savalle to name a few. You’ll even get valuable insights from some of our other School of Motion instructors, Nol Honig and Mike Fredrick.
Access hundreds of project files
With every student completing something unique, you’ll see a lot of amazing work that you’ll be curious about. If you see something you like (or don’t know how to pull off) you can download any students’ project files via the Homework Locker.
This is an opportunity that you won’t get in any other setting, take full advantage of it!
Pond5 with the hookup!
Our buddies at Pond5 have been kind enough to give us images and assets for you to use in the course. They’ve got an incredible library of HD and 4K footage, music, motion graphic templates, sound effects and images that you can license for your work, and you’ll be getting a taste of what it’s like to have professional-quality assets at your disposal. You might just get spoiled :)
Meet your classmates, get comfy with the Student Portal, and dive right in with your first project designed to get you creating on the first day!
Lay The Foundation
Time to jump in and start creating vector artwork with Adobe Illustrator using the some of the most important tools the program has to offer.
Build Your Tool Kit
This week we’ll jump into Photoshop where you’ll learn how to cut out and manipulate assets to create images that entertain and inform. You’ll even have your first taste of what it’s like to work with direction from a Creative Director.
Catchup Week: Familiar Feelings
Take a week off to catch up on any lessons and homework you’re behind on. You’ll get a short primer on the history of Adobe software, and why a lot of the tools you’ve been using feel very similar even though they’re in different programs.
Designing Your Ideas
Let’s dive even deeper into the software and explore tools and techniques that will help you build up your design chops. By the end of this week you’ll be more confident and ready for an even bigger challenge.
Unleash Your Power
You’ll be challenged like never before with a real-world project that will put all of your new-found Photoshop and Illustrator knowledge to the test.
You’ve got an additional 2 weeks to finish your final project and to get targeted feedback from your Teaching Assistant. This should give you plenty of time to give that project some polish so you can start building up your portfolio.
