“I think that's what’s happening a lot in this Echoic piece, is that I am trying to constrain things to a form, I'm trying to push them to become a form and then magical things happen…”

Nidia Dias

What’s covered in this Workshop?

01

About Nidia

To kick things off, we cover Nidia’s journey through motion design. We’ll look at some of her past work and discuss some of the influences that helped shape her distinctive style as well as how her ideas go from brief to fruition.

02

Balancing act

Here we’ll continue the conversation by covering how Nidia is able to maintain the balance between Creative Director and Artist, and how she is able to guide a team of Artists to achieve a unified look.

03

Conceptualizing echoic

In this section, we dive into Nidia's inspirations for the piece. We’ll look at mood boards, tests, and the first animatic sent to the client, and discuss how experimentation with X-Particles simulations has landed some unintentional, but compelling results.

04

Sims and sands

This video covers Nidia’s unique approach to a few of the shots that were included in her first animatic. We’ll also cover a few workflow tips and tricks that help Nidia quickly iterate and organize files as she goes.

05

Powered by particles

Now we’ll cover how Nidia was able to achieve a very complex and graphical look to the blue shots with simple, but elegant techniques by utilizing the Redshift shader panel to art direct the 3D simulations into their final look.

06

The red shots

In this video, we will cover the unexpected methods that Nidia used to create the stunning red shots in Echoic. Here we’ll discover how simplicity can sometimes be the best approach to complicated shots in 3D.

What’s included in this Workshop?

  • Watch Instantly
  • Over 3 Hours of Video Workshops
  • 6+ GB of project files
  • Lifetime Access

The project

Echoic X Ident is one of Nidia’s most renowned pieces. Jam-packed with animation made for Echoic Audio, the 11-second ident is bursting with particles sims, graphic compositions, and bold colors, and is a brilliant display of Nidia’s voice and vision.

The artist

Nidia Dias is a freelance Art Director and Designer from Portugal. She’s always been fascinated with the intersection of 3D design and organic movement, and most of her work involves creating styleframes for pitches and awarded work, Art Direction, Digital Art, and commissioned pieces.

Project files and assets

In addition to the video walkthroughs, this Workshop includes various project files that were used directly in the production of these films. From initial mood boards and storyboards, down to production project files, you’ll be able to dive into the files that Nidia used to make magic for ECHOIC.

Video walkthroughs

Not only will you be able to directly interact with many of the project files used in the making of this film; you’ll also be able to follow along with in-depth video walkthroughs from Nidia herself.

FAQS

What software do I need?

The workshop can be viewed without any special software. If you want to download the project files to gain more insights, you will need the following apps for this workshop: Adobe After Effects (CC 2021 or later), Cinema 4D (R22 or later).

Are any third-party tools or plug-ins required?

There are a couple plugins and 3rd-party renderers that were used in the making of this piece. Some of the effects that use these have been modified or pre-rendered, but many haven’t, so just be aware. Plugins/Renderers: Redshift, X-Particles

Where will I be able to access my workshop?

You will be able to access your workshop through your School of Motion user dashboard. You must have an account and be logged in to access the workshop.

How is this different than a School of Motion course?

Holdframe Workshops are deep-dives into specific projects done by an artist, studio, or collective. Rather than focus on broad fundamentals, they allow for a peek behind the curtain to see how some of the best work in the industry gets made. They are much shorter than School of Motion courses and are available to watch instantly after enrollment. Workshops do not have teaching-assistants, homework, or student groups like our courses do.
